I know that I wrote a language post not too long ago, but I couldn't resist dashing off another quick one tonight. In that post I wrote about being stumped by the abbreviation cozzies. I eventually discovered the word refers to swimsuits, but I still didn't get the connection. Yesterday I happened to notice a shop called "Mozzie's Cozzies." The bottom part of the sign read "Costumes for Hire," and then it finally hit me that cozzie is short for costume, as in bathing costume.
I was telling about it Ross this evening when Cameron walked in the room talking about "Ozzy and Bozzy." Ozzy is a player on a soccer team he faced last week, while Bozzy (Mr. Bosworth) is the computer teacher/soccer coach for his school. According to Cameron, the students don't call him Bozzy to his face, but they will use Mr. Bozzy when they address him.
An older brother of one of Katie's friends was in our house on Sunday. I asked him what nicknames he has picked up along the way, and he replied that he once sat down and wrote out a long list of them. His last name is Daffy, and most of them either rhyme with his surname or pick up on the double f. Some were quite clever, but unfortunately the only one I remember is affidaffit.
I predict that abbreviations will continue to alternately amuse and puzzle us for the duration of our time in Australia.
